Group asks major role in RBRVS updates
Article Abstract:
The RBRVS Update Committee (RUC), a 26-member panel founded by the American Medical Association, hopes to have an increasing role in adjusting the resource-based relative value scale (RBRVS) system used by Medicare to pay physicians. Currently, the RUC can only make recommendations to the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) on adjusting compensation. However, the HCFA has stated that it wants more physician input into the RBRVS fee structure. Hence, the RUC may become the primary body for changing Medicare payments to reflect changes in medical technology and practice.

How to fix Medicare's RBRVS
Article Abstract:
Many doctors find Medicare's new payment system complex and less remunerative than they expected. Even primary care physicians, who were supposed to benefit from the new system, are receiving less compensation than they had hoped. The system also seems to penalize doctors who work with the sickest patients because Medicare increases hospital rates for teaching facilities and outlier cases but fails to adjust the RBRV for these cases.

Participation rates up for Medicare despite RBRVS
Article Abstract:
The number of doctors who agree to accept Medicare's standard payments for services has increased to 55.3%, compared to 49.3% in 1991. Actual compliance with Medicare rates has risen to 73%, because many physicians and practitioners who do not participate accept assignment for some services. Alabama leads the states in participation, and Idaho is lowest. Statistics are analyzed for states and for medical specialty groups.
