Public health fears threat from declining federal funds
Article Abstract:
Speakers at the American Public Health Assn's 1995 meeting decried the impact that Medicare and Medicaid spending slowdowns and managed care are having on public health services. E. Richard Brown, the group's incoming president, said that underfinancing has made it more difficult for health departments to provide core services. Former surgeon general C. Everett Koop said that healthcare professionals are discouraged to an unprecedented degree.

Too little or too much? Delegates to debate Federation overhaul
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) is undergoing changes as it moves through the 1990s, but there is some debate among members as to how to change the association. Members of the AMA House of Delegates will likely be chosen in a different way, based on proportions that also reflect the number of specialty societies. At a future date, ethic background, mode of practice and other factors may figure into the mix.
