Guidelines for Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of West Nile Virus Infection--United States
Article Abstract:
During 1999, 61 people in the New York City (NYC) metropolitan area developed West Nile (WN) virus infection. It also affected birds and horses. Some animal cases were reported in New Jersey and Connecticut also. In December 1999, the CDC announced the availability funds to support WN virus surveillance, prevention, and control projects. States along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts are eligible for these funds. Research is also needed to determine if the virus survived the winter. The best way to prevent WN infection is to control mosquito populations.
