Guidelines for sugar consumption in Europe: is a quantitative approach justified?
Article Abstract:
There are significant variations in sugar consumption between European countries. Similarly, there are variations between methods used to collect data about sugar consumption. In certain European countries, guidelines for sugar consumption have not been derived from a full assessment of national sugar consumption. Existing scientific literature does not support the view that present levels of sugar consumption in Europe are connected with obesity and have a negative impact on micronutrient intakes. At present, no reliable population-based quantitative goals can be set for sucrose, or for sugars as a whole.

A review of associations between Crohn's disease and consumption of sugars
Article Abstract:
The relationships between sugar intake and the onset of Crohn's disease (CD) are investigated using existing studies. Results show that studies which relate CD to early dietary habits are prone to errors since these rely on the recall of past dietary intakes and use inaccurate tools such as postal questionnaires. It is also found that contrary to the findings of some studies, CD patients do not consume more sugar than the general population.

Sources of energy from meals versus snacks in 220 people in four age groups
Article Abstract:
A study of the nutrient composition in food consumed by 88 elderly, 40 middle-aged, 59 young adults and 33 teens revealed that the overall food consumed by the British populace contained excessive levels of sugar. Snacks such as chocolates and squashes, consumed in large quantities by the youth, contained large amounts of sugar. Meals favored by the elderly contained proteins and fats and minimal quantities of sugar.
