Readiness is all: public health experts draft plan outlining pandemic influenza response
Article Abstract:
A coalition of government agencies and private associations is developing a plan for dealing with a possible influenza epidemic. The epidemic of 1918 killed 20 million to 40 million people worldwide. A Federal Working Group in 1993 resurrected a plan begun by the Centers for Disease Control in 1978 and presented it at an international meeting in December, 1995. Some of the recommendations include increasing influenza surveillance, especially in China and Southeast Asia, where new strains often emerge. Improved methods are needed to culture the virus in enough quantities to produce effective vaccines. In addition, an infrastructure to deliver vaccine must be developed. Representatives from 13 European countries met in September, 1993 to draft a similar plan.

Helping city children control asthma
Article Abstract:
Asthma can be effectively controlled in inner city children by evaluating each child's risk factors and effectively preventing exposure to them. This was the conclusion of the National Cooperative Inner City Asthma Study, which studied 1,528 children. Skin testing and the levels of household allergens identified many of the risk factors in each child. The use of an asthma care counselor who provided advice on avoiding irritants resulted in a 30% drop in symptoms. About 15 million people in the US suffer from asthma, many of whom live in inner cities.
