HCFA estimates 10% rate hikes for Medicare HMOs
Article Abstract:
Health maintenance organizations are expected to receive higher Medicare payment raises than the average of 8.1% predicted for all Medicare recipients. Actuaries calculate average per-capita Medicare costs and adjust them for each county. In 1995, HMOs received a raise of 5.9%, in spite of a forecast of 10.1% in July. Republicans in Congress may dispute the Medicare increases. High costs for skilled nursing facilities are causing much of the planned increase.

Medicare to cut payments to physicians
Article Abstract:
The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has decided to reduce Medicare reimbursements for primary care services by 2.3% on Jan 1, 1996. The cut is the first since the resource-based relative value scale was put into use. However, the HCFA will increase reimbursements for surgical services by 3.8% and for other nonsurgical services by 0.4%, although the rate increases are less than the usual annual increases.
