Researchers try to translate parameters into practice
Article Abstract:
Continuous medical education is inadequate for insuring that physicians follow the more than 1,300 medical guidelines that currently exist. More compelling methods include financial incentives and peer comparison. Physicians who are aware that they will have to make restitution for procedural negligence or that their negligence is the exception rather than the norm have powerful incentives for compliance. This awareness can be inculcated subtly, by way of faxes, videotapes and phone calls from colleagues.

Pros, cons of naming peer reviewers
Article Abstract:
Medicare's Professional Review Organization (PRO) peer reviewers traditionally have had an adversarial relationship with physicians. The Health Care Financing Administration is weighing the impact of revealing the names of the reviewers, who usually work anonymously. The American Medical Peer Review Association is fighting the move, but several states, including Virginia and Kansas, have open and successful PRO programs which work closely with state medical associations.

HMOs pushing clinical guidelines use by physicians
Article Abstract:
A survey by the Group Health Assn of America reveals that 82% of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) urge their physicians to comply with guidelines for clinical practice. More than half of HMOs develop their own guidelines, although they usually adapt the standards proposed by specialty groups and by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. Group Health hopes to influence HMOs to cooperate in the development of effective standards.
