HIV-1 DNA shedding in genital ulcers and its associated risk factors in Pune, India
Article Abstract:
People with genital ulcer disease (GUD) and recent HIV infection may be more likely to have HIV in ulcer secretions than patients with GUD and established HIV. Researchers analyzed ulcer specimens from 71 HIV-infected patients, and found that 6% had not yet developed antibodies to HIV. In all of these patients, samples taken from genital ulcers contained HIV DNA, compared with only 30% of samples taken from antibody-positive patients, who had been infected with HIV less recently. Early diagnosis and treatment of HIV and GUD may reduce HIV transmission to sexual partners.

Low HIV-1 incidence among married serodiscordant couples in Pune, India
Article Abstract:
During September 2002 and November 2004, 457 HIV-1 sero-discordant, married couples were enrolled in a one year prospective study of HIV transmission in Pune, India. The HIV incidence among uninfected partners was 1.22 per 100 person-years (95% C1 0.45-2.66), which is much lower than what is reported among discordant couples in Africa.

HIV-1-specific cytologic T-lymphocyte activity correlates with lower viral load, higher CD4 count, and CD8+CD38-DR- phenotype: comparison of statistical methods for measurement
Article Abstract:
Two statistical methods called area under the net HIV-specific lysis curve (AUC) and linear regression of net HIV-specific lysis (LR) are most effective in determining immune activity against HIV. They show that when immune activity is highest, blood HIV levels are lowest.
