HIV-1 RNA levels and development of clinical disease in two different adolescent populations
Article Abstract:
The level of HIV in the blood determines the progression of the disease in HIV-infected teenagers, according to a study of hemophiliacs who were infected by contaminated blood transfusions and teenagers who were sexually infected. This contradicts the belief that teenagers tolerate the infection better than older patients.

HIV-1 RNA levels in an African population-based cohort and their relation to CD4 lymphocyte counts and World Health Organization clinical staging
Article Abstract:
Higher viral levels in the blood of HIV patients in Africa was linked to more severe illness, but only in patients who had been infected for 6 years or less. Researchers used the nucleic acid sequence-based amplification procedure (NASBA) test kit to measure HIV RNA in blood from 105 HIV patients.

Predictive markers of HIV-related weight loss and determination of differences between populations with weight loss stratified by opportunistic processes
Article Abstract:
High viral levels as measured by HIV RNA are a risk factor for weight loss in HIV patients but only when they occur at week 8 of the infection. This means that patients can reduce their risk of weight loss by lowering blood levels of the virus.
