HIV incidence in Ethiopian immigrants to Israel
Article Abstract:
Ethiopian immigrants represent 40% of persons infected with HIV in Israel, yet the incidence of HIV infection in this population may have fallen since they left Ethiopia. The high rate of HIV in Ethiopian immigrants has led Israel to ban them from donating blood for transfusion. Researchers applied statistical models to estimate HIV infection rates in Israel. Most new infections in the country seem to be among Ethiopian immigrants. The rate of HIV infection in Ethiopian immigrants in Israel is approximately half the rate among those who remain in Ethiopia.

Molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 in Brazil: high prevalence of HIV-1 subtype B and identification of an HIV-1 subtype D infection in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Article Abstract:
A patient infected with HIV subtype D has been identified in Brazil. Researchers genetically examined 131 HIV patients in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to identify the prevalence of several viral subtypes. Subtype B was detected in 81% of patients, while subtype F infected 15% of the tested patients. One patient was infected with subtype D. No relationship between viral type and gender or mode of infection could be identified.
