HIV seropositivity rates in outreach-based counseling and testing services: program evaluation
Article Abstract:
A study has confirmed the long-held assuption that the use of outreach-based programs will reach a higher percetange of seroprevalent people than any such survey and counseling which is clinic-based. Analysis of 62,299 records confirmed that theory, showing that people interviewed by outreach were 23% more likely to test HIV-positive than those who came in to the clinic for testing and counseling. This would indicate that restructuring the outreach services to respond to this reality would be in the best interests of public health.

Occasional condom use and HIV risk reduction
Article Abstract:
The occasional use of a condom during sex can significantly reduce the risk of transmitting HIV. The CDC recommends using a condom every time, but most adults and teenagers do not use condoms consistently. A mathematical model shows that using condoms half the time reduces the risk of transmission by half, compared to using a condom all the time. This occurs in part because HIV is not always infectious. Infectivity tends to be great during the initial infection but falls during the long asymptomatic period before AIDS develops.

Updates of cost of illness and quality of life estimates for use in economic evaluations of HIV prevention programs
Article Abstract:
Prevention of HIV infection can be extremely cost effective, as the lifetime cost of caring for a patient with HIV is approximately $195,000. Each case of HIV results in the loss of 11.23 years of quality-adjusted life.
