Hard sell?
Article Abstract:
Patient choice has formed the basis of government publicity surrounding 'The Patient's Charter' and changes in the NHS, but marketing work may actually encourage patients to have over-optimistic expectations. Waiting times alone are not a sufficient indication of service improvements, and often both patients and GPs are limited in their choice of hospital. Patients are also likely to be disappointed, at least in the short term, by health service standards promised in charters, and have only limited access to the information required to allow them to determine the standards of services provided.

Poisonous preservative
Article Abstract:
Insecticide, Lindane may cause aplastic anaemia. A test case against Rentokil for failing to warn of the toxicity of a woodworm treatment containing Lindane will be be judged in the High court in 1994. William Gaskill's diagnosis of aplastic anaemia at the age of five may be associated with treatment of the house against woodworm when he was two. Rentokil have previously made out of court settlements in similar cases. However, Gaskill's 'idiosyncratic reaction' may be insufficient to prove Lindane caused aplastic anaemia.

Beastly dilemma: animal experiments provoke strong reactions from lay people and health professionals alike
Article Abstract:
The Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act was established 10 years ago as a way of licensing the regulation of scientific experiments on animals. However the act does not ban any particular type of experiment, but calls on scientists to justify the procedures. Animal rights activists believe that animals should not be used if there is no alternative and some organisations criticise the scientific validity of animal tests. An EU directive has called for an 50% reduction in animal testing by 2000.
