Hazards and benefits of alcohol
Article Abstract:
Moderate alcohol consumption was associated with lower mortality in a study of 490,000 older adults. Alcohol is widely-used in social and ceremonial settings, but is conventionally associated with increased illness, violence and injury. Among older people, alcohol may reduce the death rate from cardiovascular disease. Dietary changes and exercise can also reduce cardiovascular mortality. There is risk that people will interpret these findings as a recommendation to drink. Increased consumption of alcohol will likely lead to more injury, death, and economic costs.

Fiber and colorectal cancer -- where to now?
Article Abstract:
A 1999 study that followed about 90,000 nurses for 16 years found that a high-fiber diet did not protect women from developing colorectal cancer. However, many other studies have found a lower risk of colorectal cancer in people who eat a high-fiber diet. Men and women appear to have different risk factors for colorectal cancer, and a low-fiber diet may only be a risk factor in men. There are also differences in intestinal function between men and women. In addition, fiber occurs in many forms and more research is needed to determine which form is best.

Alcohol for stroke prevention?
Article Abstract:
It may be premature to recommend alcohol as a means of preventing cardiovascular disease. A 1999 study showed that doctors who drank one or more alcoholic drinks per week had a lower risk of stroke. Other studies have indicated that alcohol may protect some people from heart disease. However, alcohol consumption can become addictive and alcoholism is responsible for many social problems. Alcoholic beverages may be most beneficial in people who have already had a stroke or heart attack.
