Health at home means watching the global village
Article Abstract:
Public health prevention and control programs should extend beyond borders and encompass the world's population. The increase in people moving between countries has brought a greater risk of infectious disease. Tuberculosis is considered the biggest threat to immigrants and to people in developed countries. Although TB had been declining in developed countries, the situation changed in the mid-1980s with the increase in immigration from countries where TB is prevalent. The immigrants are screened for disease, but these tests vary in quality and should be followed up by physicians in the U.S. Other health risks are Chagas disease and cysticercosis caused by parasites and prevalent in Latin American countries.

HIV Drug Resistance Testing Shows Promise
Article Abstract:
Scientists are developing tests that can determine whether an HIV patient has a strain of HIV that is resistant to AIDS drugs. One test identifies specific gene mutations that allow the virus to resist specific drugs. The other test measures how well the virus can grow in culture in the presence of AIDS drugs. Once doctors know which drugs the virus can resist, they can give the patient another drug. However, there are still very few effective AIDS drugs, which means that drug research must continue.
