Health care reform at the close of the 20th century
Article Abstract:
It is unlikely that universal access to health care financed by a single payer will occur in the US any time soon. The failure of the Clinton proposal for health care reform and the public's general distaste for big government means that a catastrophic event may be necessary for Americans to accept national health care reform. Such an event could be an economic depression, world war, or a disease epidemic even greater than AIDS. Unless that happens, efforts to improve the quality of medical care will focus on small improvements to the current market-based system.
