Shelter-based homeless youth: health and access to care
Article Abstract:
Youth living in emergency homeless shelters vary in their health needs, depending on their previous living arrangements. Researchers surveyed 109 homeless youth that had lived on the street, in temporary arrangements with friends or lovers, or in foster care. Street youths and those who had lived in temporary settings had higher rates of unprotected sex, forced sex, and drug abuse. Youth from foster care had better health and more access to health care. Street youths were likely to be uninsured and to have used emergency departments for health care.

School-based health center utilization: a survey of users and nonusers
Article Abstract:
Many high school students may not use their school-based health center (SBHC). Researchers analyzed the characteristics of users and non-users of a SBHC at a high school in New York City. Of 630 students who responded to a survey, 40% were not registered with the clinic. Many said they already had a physician, did not need to use the clinic, did not know about the clinic or were concerned about privacy. Those who did use the clinic were satisfied with the services, and rates of various mental health problems were similar in the two groups.
