Sexual health contraceptive needs of adolescents with chronic conditions
Article Abstract:
Physicians must be prepared to counsel youth with disabilities about sexual health and contraception. A number of erroneous beliefs interfere with providing disabled youths the information they need such as that disabled youths are not interested in sexual activity and that parents will provide adequate sex education. However, disabled youths present special issues that must be addressed. These include vulnerability to sexual exploitation or assault and that social isolation leads to poor social skills. The effects of the condition on appearance, functioning, and fertility must be considered and individualized recommendations for contraception made.

Preventing teen pregnancy with emergency contraception: an opportunity we should not be missing
Article Abstract:
Pediatricians who care for sexually active teenagers should make sure these teens know about emergency contraceptives. Many sexually active teens do not consistently use condoms or other barrier methods and many may become pregnant. Emergency birth control pills consist of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. If taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, the pills can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 75% or more. However, many teens are not aware that this option exists. Educating teens and providing access to this contraceptive can reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy.
