Helping Billy move on
Article Abstract:
The use of Peplau's model of nursing in establishing a therapeutic relationship with a man with psychiatric problems is presented. The man, Billy, was aged 45 and homeless. The care programme commenced with the orientation phase, in which the situation was assessed based on Mosey's adaptive skills. The interpersonal process commenced with an identification phase, in which the patient seeks help for perceived needs and goals are set. The nurse and the patient work towards these goals in the exploitation phase. Both nurse and patient 'grow' so that the relationship is resolved in the resolution phase.

Fellow feelings
Article Abstract:
Mental health patients require an understanding carer as well as expert medical care, although it is often hard for the close friends or family of a mentally ill person to know what care is required. Mental health nurses need to ensure open communication lines with family of mentally ill people, with the aim of providing help for those who have difficulties in dealing with the day to day difficulties encountered due to illness. The erratic nature of mental health means it will often never be cured but family and friends can be educated to deal with situations more easily.
