Helping cancer patients to retain information
Article Abstract:
Research shows that tape-recording consultations helps cancer patients to retain information and reduces depression and anxiety. Patients gain a sense of control and cope better with their illness through being given sufficient information. Eighteen of 34 patients with advanced cancer were allowed to take home their tape-recorded consultations. All but one of the patients were encouraged by using the tapes. On the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale, the anxiety level of the taped group fell to 3.1 from 7.1 within a week, while the untaped group's anxiety was 6.1 vs 6.9. Information recall also increased significantly with the tapes but only slightly improved without tapes.

Facing facts
Article Abstract:
Patients undergoing surgery for facial cancer need a great deal of psychological support both before and after their operation if they are to cope with the facial disfigurement and possible disturbances in swallowing and speech that can ensue. Patients already shocked and fearful at learning that they have cancer also have to handle the stigma of being facially disfigured. Patients and their families must be given guidance and counselling to prepare them for the social and psychological disabilities arising from facial cancer. The experience of one sufferer from facial cancer is described.
