Emerging infections on center stage at first major international meeting
Article Abstract:
The first large-scale international meeting on emerging infectious diseases was held in Atlanta, GA, in March 1998. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that hospital-acquired infections have risen 36% in the past 20 years, and as many as 70% are resistant to one or more antibiotics. Better enforcement of hand-washing practices and monitoring of antibiotic use is critical. Participants discussed food-borne illnesses from undercooked pork, eggs, oysters, and produce. A session on bioterrorism presented an analysis of biological weaponry and defensive strategies.
