Helping parents cope
Article Abstract:
Parents of babies born with cleft palates need a special kind of support from nurses and other professionals, particularly in the early months. Details of a research project aimed at investigating parents' needs are presented. The findings show that all families appreciate prompt advice on feeding techniques and need the opportunity to talk about their problems with sympathetic professionals.

Playing doctors and nurses takes the fear out of hospital
Article Abstract:
Play therapy can assist very ill children and other children in their family to cope with illness. A play specialist can distract child patients to enable them to be treated quickly and establish a play programme which will make them more comfortable with repeat admissions and other treatments. Play specialists also visit families and help brothers and sisters during illness and after death.

More help is needed for socially deprived parents whose children are handicapped or need a lot of health care. Parents of such children tend to be short of time, suffer from reduced income. and face extra costs for food, laundry, heating, transport and adapting their homes. The situation can have an adverse impact on the relationship of parents and also on siblings.
