Helping patients take responsibility for their own health
Article Abstract:
Many patients with chronic or recurring problems can be taught to manage their symptoms without seeking medical care. This was demonstrated in a study of women with recurring urinary tract infections. Other conditions that could be managed this way include diabetes, asthma, arthritis, hypertension, angina pectoris and epilepsy.

Patient-initiated treatment of recurrent urinary tract infection in women
Article Abstract:
Doctors may want to give women with recurring urinary tract infections a supply of antibiotics to take when they develop symptoms of an infection. This may be better than having the woman take low doses of antibiotics all the time, whether she has symptoms or not.
