Helping the young ones
Article Abstract:
A community children's health service is available in just 50% of the UK and paediatric nurses are angered at the low priority given to sick children by politicians. Health authorities are often reluctant to appreciate that specially-trained children's nurses are needed to meet the needs of sick children and that nurses without paediatric training may expect too much of their young patients. Trained children's nurses can observe problems that a sick child may be unable to express verbally. Paediatric nurses must be well supported and offered good leadership in order to succeed.

Sisterhood is powerful
Article Abstract:
Changes in nursing practice coupled with changes in the health service have raised questions about the exact role of ward sisters but leadership skills are undoubtedly an essential requirement. Ward sisters should delegate responsibility for clinical tasks to the nursing team but retain overall control and remain actively involved in patient care. There is a feeling that ward sisters have not been accorded the status and salary appropriate to a person who has to make management decisions while maintaining clinical credibility.

Invisible women
Article Abstract:
Failure to make early diagnosis of AIDS/HIV infected women has resulted in premature death. Doctors are slow to recognise the symptoms in women and may not offer new treatments. In Scotland 27% of HIV infected patients are women. The Edinburgh based Women and HIV-AIDS Network has arranged conferences covering women-related AIDS issues to increase awareness and counter misconceptions. Proceedings will be published in December, 1992. Flexible services should be provided to encourage women to seek early advice.
