Prescribing cost revealed
Article Abstract:
A new Private Members' Bill estimates that it will cost 17 million pounds sterling a year to give community nurses prescribing powers in the UK. The cost of providing nurses in England with the powers is estimated at 13.3 million pounds sterling. If the Bill is made law, nurses will have the power to prescribe medication early in 1993. The Bill would involve 11.7 million pounds sterling in extra prescription charges, and administration costs of 1.7 million pounds sterling related to dispensing treatments.

Emergency pressures
Article Abstract:
General Practitioners (GPs) should be able to bypass hospital accident and emergeny (A&E) units and admit patients directly to wards. A survey in Basildon and Thurrock Health Authority, England has established GP diagnosis is rarely wrong. The A&E unit is inappropriate for chronic problems that may cause delay and increased pressure on staff. However, bed shortages necessitate tight control over admissions. Separate admissions units may provide a compromise.

The final frontier
Article Abstract:
The state government of Australia's Northern Territory is the first in the world to introduce a euthanasia law. The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1995 allows terminally ill people to end their lives if they have satisfied two medical practitioners and a psychiatrist that they have freely made the decision. However, the complex legal wrangling surrounding the new law means that, as yet, no-one has been allowed to die under its provisions.
