Use of Interferon for Prevention of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Cirrhotic Patients with Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C Virus Infection
Article Abstract:
It is possible that interferon therapy may prevent liver cancer in patients with cirrhosis, particularly those infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) or hepatitis B virus (HBV), but current evidence only suggests that its use might be effective. The long-term randomized, controlled trials needed to provide a definitive answer may be difficult, if not impossible, to conduct because of the improved efficacy of combination therapy with interferon and ribavirin in patients with chronic HCV infection and the development of new therapies for patients with HBV infection.

Lack of association between hepatitis C infection and development of AIDS-related lymphoma
Article Abstract:
There does not seem to be an association between the presence of a hepatitis-C virus infection in a person who is HIV positive and any increased risk of the subsequent development of AIDS-related lymphoma. In examination of 99 homosexual or bisexual men who had lymphoma, and 43 other AIDS patients, the proportionate incidence was similar. Hepatitis C virus was found in 11.1% of the men with lymphoma and in 11.6% of those without. In the men who had lymphoma, it was not possible to find any relation between the hepatitis C viral infection and the lymphoma.
