Hidden extras
Article Abstract:
The initial 1 billion pound sterling cost of clinical grading has been greatly increased by appeals. Hidden costs include 1,000 pounds for administration and backpay for successful cases. About 37,000 appeals are awaiting decision. Appeals may have cost the National health Service 36-40 million pounds. Successful appellants may also receive 8,686 pounds in backpay producing a bill of 80-107 million pounds. Staff frustration over delays may have a detrimental effect on patient care.

Eight nurses die before appeals heard
Article Abstract:
Up to eight nurses who have died while appealing against clinical grades have won appeals posthumously, after their cases were represented by unions. There were 1,890 national appeals outstanding as of May 31 1992, and there is a backlog of 20,412 regional appeals as of start Jul 1992. Processing the appeals could take up to 103 years, but this time could be reduced to 20 years following a 'fast tracking' agreement.

What's in a name?
Article Abstract:
The UKCC has proposed using the title registered nurse (RN) to replace other nursing titles such as RGN and SRN as from Sep 1, 1992. The move was made in response for a title for Project 2000 nurses. However, it will not be compulsory and there will no pressure on nurses to drop the old titles. The title will also apply to all ENs in recognition of their professional registration.
