The state we're in
Article Abstract:
Speculation that the nursing profession would be eroded by the introduction of National Health Service (NHS) reforms seems unfounded. The effects of community care have been less than expected and politicians realise that the NHS is a sensitive electoral issue. The nurses' role has expanded as a result of the reforms but their workload has increased and morale is low. Nurses feel that caring for patients is considered less important by trust managers more interested in finances than patients.

Drawing the line
Article Abstract:
Nurses dispute former personnel director, Eric Caines assertion that the UK National Health Service requires fewer qualified nurses. They consider his call for a greater proportion of untrained staff would reduce the quality of care. Closer attention to hospital practice would produce a more informed opinion. Fewer trained nurses would prevent the fulfillment of patient charter requirements. They believe an attempt to reduce costs underlies his remarks.

The devil you know
Article Abstract:
It is still common to find conflict between nurses and managers in the UK National Health Service. Nurses are often suspicious of managers, who seem far removed from patient care. In some cases, it is convenient for nurses to be able to blame managers when problems arise.
