High-risk sexual behavior among drug users: the utility of a typology of alcohol variables
Article Abstract:
People who consume large amounts of alcohol or who used alcohol at an early age appear to be more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behavior than low-risk alcohol users. Questionnaires on sexual behavior, thrill seeking, and alcohol and drug use were completed by 283 participants previously enrolled in a drug treatment program. High-risk alcohol users were significantly more likely to inconsistently use condoms, have multiple sexual partners, have had a sexually transmitted disease, or have a history of exchanging sex for money or drugs than low-risk alcohol users. Thrill seeking does not explain these trends.

Sex partners of native American drug users
Article Abstract:
Many Native American drug users are not using condoms during sex, which could increase their risk of contracting HIV. Researchers surveyed 110 Native Americans receiving treatment for drug use in four US cities. About half were men and half women. Overall, 55% of the women said they never used condoms, compared to 23% of the men. Women whose partner was a white man were least likely to use condoms, and in these couples, the man was most likely to be a drug addict also. This could lead to the transmission of HIV from white male drug addicts to the Native American population.

A study of sexual behavior among rural residents of China
Article Abstract:
Sexual practices which increase the risk of infectious disease transmission are not uncommon among the rural Chinese. Researchers anonymously surveyed 886 sexually active adults in Anhui, a region mostly populated by farmers. Twenty-three percent had had premarital sex, and 8% had had more than one sexual partner. Oral sex was reported by 4%, and anal intercourse by 2% of respondents. Only 11% reported using condoms in every sexual act. Sex education emphasizing condom use and safe-sex practices may reduce the risk of HIV infection in rural China.
