Detrimental effects of continued illicit drug use on the treatment of HIV-1 infection
Article Abstract:
HIV patients who are actively abusing drugs are less likely to comply with treatment, according to a study of 764 HIV patients. For this reason, all HIV-infected drug addicts should be offered substance abuse treatments in addition to anti-HIV drugs.

Incidence of, risk factors for, clinical presentation, and 1-year outcomes of infective endocarditis in an urban HIV cohort
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to evaluate the incidence of, risk factors for, clinical presentation, and 1-year outcomes of infective endocarditis (IE) in HIV-infected patients. There is a significant morbidity and 1-year mortality in HIV-infected patients with IE, indicating the need for more aggressive follow-up, especially in those over 40 years of age.

Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy in a Large Urban Clinic: Risk Factors for Virologic Failure and Adverse Drug Reactions
Article Abstract:
Use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) with patients visiting clinics is much less successful in suppressing HIV-1 RNA virus counts than it is with patients in controlled clinical trials. the major factor contributing to this failure is patients missing clinic visits. Among 273 patients taking a protease inhibitor regimen for the first time, successful suppression of the viral load reached a high of 44% of patients at three to seven months into the study, then dropped off to 37% after seven to 14 months. This is compared to clinical trials in which HAART reduces levels 60% to 90% of patients.
