Home Office cut the red tape
Article Abstract:
The UK Home Office Sec Kenneth Clarke has decided to redraft the Fire Precautions (Places of Work) Regulations 1992 because they will impose stricter laws than are required by the European Community. Clarke aims to simplify the regulations and limit their scope to avoid unnecessary cost to businesses. Most factories, offices, shops and hotels have adequate protection under the Fire Precautions Act 1971. The new draft will require employers to undertake risk assessment and a fire emergency plan.

BEC fights EC on site voltage
Article Abstract:
A European Commission proposal which plans to introduce mains voltage portable electrical equipment on UK construction sites is being fought by the Building Employers Confederation (BEC). The proposal would allow such equipment along existing reduced low voltage systems, and the BEC claims that it may threaten construction worker safety. The British low voltage directive is being accused of blocking trading of portable electrical equipment in Europe.
