Home is where the hurt is
Article Abstract:
Poor housing could cost the health service about 2.4 billion pounds sterling a year, according to the National Housing Federation, and there were almost 1.5 million homes unsuitable for human habitation according to the English House Conditions Survey in 1991. A major redevelopment of estates in Stepney, east London, involves a before and after study, and it was found that over two thirds of the homes were damp, with a third infested with cockroaches, rats or mice. Households with damp were found to have twice as many illness days as those without.
