When shareholders come before service
Article Abstract:
The project to build a hospital in Stonehaven, Scotland is highly controversial and has attracted opposition because of its dependence on the government private finance initiative (PFI) scheme. Under the scheme, private firms are bidding for a contract to win the hospital and lease it back to the National Health Service. The contract winner will also be responsible for running nursing and clinical services. However nurses are worried that their pay and conditions will suffer, and that private firms will put profit and shareholders first.

The legacy of Dunblane
Article Abstract:
Dunblane, Scotland, became the centre of media attention in March 1996, when a crazed gunman killed 16 primary school children and their teacher in their classroom. Among those who were first on the scene were the local nurses, who now have to learn to live with the consequences of the tragedy. Support services and healthcare organisations in the region have helped the nurses to cope by offering them counselling and care plans, and giving them time to come to terms with what they have witnessed.
