Homing in on drug rounds
Article Abstract:
A pilot study involving 20 Northern Ireland nursing homes each registered for between 25 and 35 residents has revealed that drugs are frequently administered in an inappropriate manner. The likelihood of inappropriate dosage intervals for drugs requiring administration at intervals of at least four hours was significant in 12 homes. Drugs were inappropriately administered in relation to food in 14 homes. Just one registered nurse participated in the morning medicine round in 65% of the homes, and just three homes had a flexible morning medicine round.

How to avoid mistakes in medicine administration
Article Abstract:
There are a number of steps which can be taken to ensure that the danger of medicine misadministration is kept to a minimum. It is vital to ensure security at all stages of the process of administering medicines, with pre-printed order forms being particularly useful in this respect. There should be expiry dates on the labels of all pharmaceutical products, and these must be checked at all times. It is vital to use properly designed labels, and care must be taken to check for adverse drug reactions.
