Hospitals fear scrutiny over recruitments, doctors pay
Article Abstract:
Hospitals are panicking over the federal government's crackdown on physician incentives and are forcing some physicians to repay the hospitals' incentive money. The Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mount Vernon, IL, forced internist John Russell to repay a $120,000 income guarantee during a period when his practice was failing because the region was oversaturated with physicians. Hospital officials said that Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General's Special Fraud Alert on possible Medicare violations forced them to demand the money. Dr. Russell declared bankruptcy.

Growth spurt may doom weak hospitals
Article Abstract:
Some marginally financed or poorly managed hospitals may be forced out of business as a result of well-funded hospitals' plans to take advantage of low interest rates to construct large new buildings for inpatient and outpatient care. The shift to outpatient services will emphasize cooperation between physicians and hospitals. For instance, observers expect Chicago's planned Northwestern Memorial Hospital to draw group practice to its facilities.

HCFA: U.S. hospitals can reject Mexican transfers
Article Abstract:
The Health Care Financing Administration has ruled that although US hospitals must accept any patient who comes through their doors, they are not required to accept patient transfers from Mexican hospitals and physicians. US hospitals may choose to treat such patients if they wish, and they are required to treat Mexican patients who come to the US and end up in a US hospital.
