How to grow more leaders
Article Abstract:
The qualities of the ward leader are very significant in the creation of therapeutic patient-centred care. Nurses who have the appropriate qualities are able to relate to the experiences of both their patients and their staff, and they are able to inspire and nurture their nurses. They participate fully in ward life and help nurses value their work. If the UK National Health Service rewarded good ward leaders appropriately they would stay on the wards and improvements would occur in areas including quality of patient care and the status of the nursing profession.

Throwing a good book at doctors
Article Abstract:
The UK NHS Executive's consultation paper 'Supporting Doctors, Protecting Patients,' contains a lot of good ideas which could be applied to other members of the medical profession. According to the paper, doctors would be investigated locally if accused of misconduct or of failing to adhere to their National Health Service contracts. They would be suspended in cases of alleged clinical incompetence, and training centres would be established to give doctors supervision and support in cases of loss of confidence or lack of skills.
