Human immunodeficiency virus infection and women: a survey of missed opportunities for testing and diagnosis
Article Abstract:
Many women of reproductive age are not being tested for HIV even when they are known to be at risk. Researchers evaluated the history of health care contacts made by 81 women subsequently diagnosed with HIV infection. Eighty percent had at least one missed opportunity to be tested during the 12 months prior to the diagnosis. Almost all of the women with high-risk behaviors had a missed opportunity. Most of their health care encounters during that time were for gynecologic concerns, illustrating the fact that many gynecologists are not aware of the need for testing high-risk women.

Evaluation of the centrifuged and Gram-stained smear, urinalysis, and reagent strip testing to detect asymptomatic bacteriuria in obstetric patients
Article Abstract:
Urine cultures are the best way to detect bacteria in the urine of pregnant women. Other tests may be quicker but are not as accurate, even in combination. Bacterial infection can cause a kidney disease called pyelonephritis if untreated.
