Hydrostatic pressure induces expression of interleukin 6 and tumour necrosis factor alpha mRNAs in a chondrocyte-like cell line
Article Abstract:
Constant high pressure appears to induce changes in cartilage cells which may lead to the joint damage of osteoarthritis. Researchers exposed chondrocytes, or cartilage cells, to high pressure and studied the changes in shape and function. Pressure caused an increase in the expression of genes encoding for interleukin 6 (IL6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF) production. TNF promotes degradation of connective tissues, and IL6 is involved in tissue response to injury. High pressure due to weight bearing by joints may promote cartilage degradation in osteoarthritis.

Thrombin receptor mediated signals induce expressions of interleukin 6 and granulocyte colony stimulating factor via NF-kappa B activation in synovial fibroblasts
Article Abstract:
The thrombin receptor in synovial tissues of rheumatoid arthritic joints may induce inflammatory changes in the joint membrane. Researchers tested synovium samples from surgical patients with rheumatoid arthritis and found that thrombin, in excess in the fluid of rheumatoid joints, induced the production of interleukin 6 and granulocyte colony stimulating factor. These inflammatory cytokines, associated with nuclear factor-kappa B, contribute to joint inflammation and damage. Antithrombin substances may be therapeutic in rheumatoid arthritis.

Serum samples of patients with rheumatoid arthritis contain a specific autoantibody to "denatured" aldolase A in the osteoblast-like cell line, MG-63
Article Abstract:
An antibody to aldolase A in rheumatoid arthritis joints may play a role in the joint damage and bone erosion in the disease. Researchers compared blood samples from arthritis patients and healthy people and found that 10% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis had the specific enzyme antibody in their blood. The antibody was not found in patients with other forms of arthritis, or in healthy people.
