Hygienic practices
Article Abstract:
The foodborne infections caused by escherichia coli, a member of the coliform group of bacteria, fall into four general categories - enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) and enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). EHEC is responsible for a wide range of illnesses, most of which are self-limiting, while EIEC has been linked with foodborne illness for some time. In all cases of E. coli infection, it is vital to practice high standards of personal hygiene and to avoid contact with others in order to prevent the spread of infection.

Motivation: the key factor
Article Abstract:
Health-care personnel must be motivated to follow the appropriate procedures for infection control. Nurses working in operating theatres are taught to be aware of preventing cross-infection, but education does not always lead to compliance. Fear of infection from high-risk patients could motivate staff to wear protective clothing, although staff surveyed claimed increased knowledge would be likely to ensure their compliance. The example set by senior personnel was deemed a motivating factor, as was the length of time available for adhering to established procedures.

Can ward-based learning improve infection control?
Article Abstract:
New ways must be developed of enabling nurses to further their post-registration education, with ward-based learning a possible means of allowing nurses to study in a learning environment. The infection control practice of nurses was used to research the potential for ward-based teaching of clinical practices. There were problems with this method due to the impracticalities of trying to teach nurses who were unable to attend all the teaching sessions. However, some of the programmes were successful.
