Hypothermia-Related Deaths--Alaska, October 1998-April 1999, and Trends in the United States, 1979-1996
Article Abstract:
Deaths from hypothermia in the US have dropped but the cases of three Alaskan men show that some Americans are still in danger. Hypothermia occurs when the body's core temperature drops to 95 degrees or less. It occurs most often in northern states and western states at high elevations. Being outdoors for extended periods of time in extremely cold weather is the biggest risk factor. People who do so should dress warmly, be aware of travel advisories, and know survival techniques in case they become stranded.
