Desperately seeking subjects: preventive emphasis, diversity goals help to drive demand for human 'guinea pigs' for clinical trials
Article Abstract:
Demand for human subjects for medical studies is at an all-time high. Increasing emphasis on preventive studies, which require up to thousands of subjects, is fueling demand for human subjects. Participation among women and minorities remains low despite efforts to reach these populations. Only about 2% of women with breast cancer enter clinical trials, hampering the efforts of breast cancer researchers.

CDC, NIH halt controversial use of placebos in AZT trials
Article Abstract:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health have requested that placebo arms be dropped in AZT clinical trials testing mother-to-child HIV transmission. Short-term studies showed that AZT apparently lowers vertical transmission, and that placebo usage would then be unethical. Critics counter that placebo bans would complicate evaluation.
