Imiquimod for genital warts
Article Abstract:
A prescription drug for treating genital warts has been approved by the FDA. Imiquimod, sold by 3M Pharmaceuticals under the trade name Aldara, is self-applied three times a week until the warts are gone or for a total of 16 weeks. In an unpublished double-blind trial, use of the drug led to complete clearing of warts in 72% of the women and 33% of the men. It is available as a cream. It is not known if it is superior in effectiveness to the existing self-applied drug, podofilox. No current treatment completely eliminates the human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes the warts, which generally return after treatment.
