Immunohistochemical characterization of placental nitric oxide synthase expression in preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
High blood pressure during pregnancy may change or damage the blood vessels of the placenta, as revealed by measurements of nitric oxide in these vessels. Nitric oxide is produced by the cells lining blood vessels, and is known to dilate blood vessels. Researchers measured the amount of nitric oxide in certain blood vessels in the just-delivered placentas of women with hypertension and of women with normal blood pressure. Nitric oxide was found in the small, terminal capillaries of placentas from hypertensive women but not in those of women with normal blood pressure. This finding may indicate that the lack of oxygen experienced by fetus and placenta because of hypertension causes nitric oxide to be produced. Also, the appearance of the nitric oxide differed from normal in the hypertensive placentas.

Changes in activity of cytosolic phospholipase A(sub)2 in human amnion at parturition
Article Abstract:
Cytosolic phospholipase A2, an enzyme found in amniotic fluid, appears to play a role in the labor preparation process. It may also serve as a catalyst for the production and functioning of prostaglandins and arachidonic acid during labor. Cytosolic phospholipase A2 activity was determined in amniotic samples from six premature deliveries with labor, seven premature deliveries without labor, five deliveries with labor, and seven full-term deliveries without labor. Longer pregnancies had higher enzyme activity levels with the highest activity found in full-term samples without labor. Activity dropped significantly after labor.

Heat shock protein-70 and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal adducts in human placental villous tissue of normotensive preeclamptic and intrauterine growth restricted pregnancies
Article Abstract:
Study is conducted to compare immunohistochemical expression of heat shock protein-70 (hsp70) and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal adducts (HNE) in placental villous tissue of normotensive, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) pregnancies. Results indicate that hsp70 and HNE adducts do have a vital role in preeclampsia with or without IUGR, confirming that these markers should not be used in the analysis of oxidative stress in placentas from pregnancies complicated by these pathologic processes.
