Implantable artificial hearts: the Harefield experience
Article Abstract:
Artificial devices can be better for some patients than heart transplants. The first patient at Harefield Hospital, Middlesex, UK, to go home with an implanted left ventricular assist device was Kevin Allen, who had been suffering from respiratory problems which caused pulmonary oedema and failure of his left ventricle. There is a risk of various problems as a result of the procedure, such as failure of various organs, infection and thrombosis. The operation is only permitted for a restricted number of patients according to certain criteria.
