Implementation of an antiretroviral access program for HIV-1-infected individuals in resource-limited settings
Article Abstract:
The final results of the Cohort Program to Evaluate Access to Antiretroviral Therapy and Education (CARE) initiative are described. The virologic and immunologic responses to highly active antiretroviral therapy in resource-limited African settings could be as good as in Western settings if adequate medical care, counseling, proper instruction, and education of patients and medical staff during the entire study is warranted with special care in the early phase.

Baseline plasma virus load and CD4 cell percentage predict survival in HIV-1- and HIV-2-infected women in a community-based cohort in The Gambia
Article Abstract:
The study aims to estimate and compare the all-cause mortality rates among HIV-1-infected, HIV-2-infected and uninfected women and to assess the predictive value of baseline plasma load (PVL) and CD4 cell percentage (CD4%) for mortality. It is concluded that survival of HIV-1-infected women in The Gambia is similar to that in industrialized countries before the introduction of antiretroviral treatment.
