Assessing health needs and measuring patient satisfaction
Article Abstract:
Proposed National Health Service (NHS) changes will make district health authorities responsible for a district's residents, for whose health needs it will have to contract for services. In the near future, health needs will probably be based on earlier service utilisation information. Most patients will say they are satisfied with their hospital care in general, but will criticise particular aspects, according to studies. Being in hospital is stressful for patients, but is linked to social support from other patients and friends and family, not only with the hospital. Day surgery costs the service provider less, and reduce waiting times for the consumer. The consumer is also able to return to the home environment more quickly. The method for assessing the needs of the district is also presented.

Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) will embark on a programme to encourage patients to help plan their own treatment which many professionals are reluctant to support. Health care services are still evaluated in terms of medical success rates rather than practical implications on everyday life. Surveys suggests that patients prefer to take part in treatment choice. The NHS Executive guidance document entitled 'Patient Partnership: Building a Collaborative Strategy' is a progressive document which will pave the way towards patient participation.
