In search of common ground
Article Abstract:
The appointment of Stephen Griffin as the Labour Relations Director for the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) may be surprising to some RCN members. Griffin has previously worked as a National Health Service manager and, as such, may appear to come from a sector with interests opposing those of RCN members. However, Griffin is a diplomatic negotiator with an approach which seeks to establish common ground. Griffin understands nurses' anger over their pay rates and is keen to press for higher wages, but he also sees possibilities for pay increases in claims for equal pay.

A world of opportunities
Article Abstract:
UK nurses who wish to boost their earnings are increasingly seeking employment in Australia, New Zealand or the US. It is hard to make a direct comparison of nurses' salaries in different countries, as there are significant differences in tax rates and the cost of living. However, senior nurses in New Zealand, for example, tend to earn more than their counterparts in the UK, while a staff nurse in Sydney, Australia, with around four years' experience earns the equivalent of 16,952 pounds sterling a year.

Fair pay for all nurses
Article Abstract:
UK nurses on the lowest grades are being urged to stand together in their fight for higher pay awards, having been ignored in previous pay settlements. Grade E nurses are the very life blood of the National Health Service, carrying out the most basis but important daily duties on wards and dealing with patients on a face to face level. A rise in pay would ensure more nurse retention within the profession, according to unions representing nurses.
