In the Same Boat
Article Abstract:
Genetic screening can distress patients, increase health care costs, and invite discrimination. Tests to determine the susceptibility for genetic diseases can prepare patients for a future medical condition, but a positive result can produce psychological distress. Patients who have been tested for the gene for Huntington's disease have generally not suffered psychological trauma when a positive result was obtained. Excessive screening will be expensive. Insurance companies may be tempted to use genetic screening results to alter premiums and coverage rules.

The incidentalome: A threat to genomic medicine
Article Abstract:
Genomic medicine is poised to offer a broad array of new genome-scale screening tests which might lead to a phenomenon in which multiple abnormal genomic findings are discovered, analogous to the 'incidentalomas' that are often discovered in radiological studies. Several steps that could be taken to help avoid these substantive risks to the practice of genomically personalized medicine are presented.

Health-information altruists: A potentially critical resource
Article Abstract:
The emergence of patient-controlled electronic medical records provides several potential mechanisms for the disclosure of health information. However, in reaction to the increased availability of information, improved requirements for guaranteed confidentiality could threaten the data hungry post genomic scientific agenda.
