The consequences of a positive prenatal HIV antibody test for women
Article Abstract:
HIV-positive women may experience greater health care discrimination, isolation, and psychological problems than HIV-negative women and these factors should be considered as more pregnant women are tested for HIV. Researchers interviewed 20 HIV-positive and 20 HIV-negative mothers who had been tested for HIV during their pregnancy. Seven (35%) of the HIV-positive women recalled incidents of health care discrimination. Positive HIV tests did not appear to affect socioeconomic status or sexual behavior, but did lead to a reduction in other risky behavior, such as drug use. More HIV-positive women than HIV-negative women were satisfied with social support, but many HIV-positive women had not revealed their HIV status to friends or family members. A greater number of HIV-positive women tended to have problems with their sexual partners, become separated, and have higher levels of anxiety. As HIV testing becomes a common part of prenatal screening, health services should be designed to meet the needs of HIV-positive women.

Pilot randomized trial of education to improve self-management skills of men with symptomatic HIV/AIDS
Article Abstract:
A program of disease self-management education may reduce symptoms and increase self-care behaviors in patients with HIV infection and AIDS. Researchers assigned 71 HIV-positive men to either participate in training sessions on exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, and symptom control, or follow a more typical care plan. Patients who attended the training reported significantly lower symptom severity, while those who were untrained reported more severe symptoms. Self-confidence in controlling symptoms increased in the training group and decreased in the untrained patients.

The elusive gold standard: Future perspectives for HIV adherence assessment and intervention
Article Abstract:
A model that provides a heuristic for selecting adherence assessment approaches and intervention strategies based on the purpose for which each is to be used is presented. Though the model proposed is expanded to include resource-rich and resource-limited settings, others could expand this model by considering other dimensions such as patient age, time since infection, or substance abuse and other personal conditions.
