Incidence of discontinuation of highly active antiretroviral combination therapy (HAART) and its determinants
Article Abstract:
Approximately 25 of each 100 HIV positive patients per year will find reason to discontinue highly active retriviral combinantion therapy (HAART) for one or more of several reasons. This was the conclusion after monitoring treatments of 99 patients for approximately 450 days each. The primary reason they had to stop HAART and switch to another form of therapy was measurement showing they were having an increasing viral load despite the therapy. Other reasons may include dissatisfaction with the rate of decrease of viral load or adverse events such as an inability to tolerate the side effects of the drugs being used.

Detection of low HIV-1 RNA levels in plasma
Article Abstract:
A modification of the most commonly used test to measure HIV RNA in blood can increase its sensitivity. Blood levels of viral RNA are used to estimate an HIV-infected patient's prognosis. One test commonly used is the Amplicor HIV Monitor test, which can detect as few as 200 copies of RNA per milliliter of blood. However, undetectable amounts of virus simply means the level of RNA is less than can be detected by this test. Researchers boosted the test by various means and found that about half of the blood samples from 29 patients with undetectable HIV RNA had RNA levels between 20 and 200 copies per milliliter.
