Incorporation of Vpr into human immunodeficiency virus type 1: role of conserved regions within the P6 domain of Pr55gag
Article Abstract:
Two repeating amino acid sequences in the p6 region of Gag proteins in HIV-1 may play a crucial role in forming the virus. It is believed that Gag proteins control the incorporation of Vpr proteins into viral particles, a necessary step in the reproduction of HIV-1. Researchers inserted various mutated genes that code for Gag and Vpr into COS-7 cells. Mutations lacking the genes that coded for the p6 domain produced fewer Gag proteins and were unable to control Vpr insertion in the viral particle. Amino acids 1-17 of the p6 domain may thus be necessary to the release of the assembled virus from cells. In addition amino acids near the N-terminus and the C-terminus of the p6 domain were important in Vpr incorporation. It may be possible to interfere with the production of these regions of the p6 domain.

In vitro selection of HIV-1 resistant to an anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody that inhibits virus transcription
Article Abstract:
HIV may develop mutations that resist the antiviral effects of monoclonal antibodies which might be useful in the treatment of HIV infection. In a laboratory, researchers in France identified viral mutations that replicated while exposed to a monoclonal antibody which generally inhibits HIV replication. If such mutations can develop in HIV-infected patients, the therapeutic value of some monoclonal antibodies may be limited.

Molecular epidemiology of HIV in Israel
Article Abstract:
HIV viral subtypes B and C predominate in Israel. Israelis and Palestinians with HIV infection commonly have subtype B of the virus, while Ethiopians in Israel are typically infected with subtype C. HIV was probably introduced to Israel through multiple populations.
